WinMX has the annoying habit to sometimes crash and freeze up on it's users. Many users then experience that the files that were downloaded when the crash occured, are useless after rebooting. The system returns "resume does not match" This can sometimes be fixed and there are two ways of doing it. Both ways are simple and you do not have to reboot.
First let me tell you what happens when the system crashes.
1) If the crash was not too bad, the only thing that happened was that the filesize registered by the program does not correspond with the physical filesize in the download folder.
2) If the crash was worse, or your boot sectors got damaged when it happened, (you then might have experienced a sudden "out of hard disk space" error even though you had gigabytes free just minutes before.) you may have file ends all over your disk, and they are randomly saved wherever there was free space at the time, until the system finaly froze.
To fix both of these problems, choose your hard drive, for instance C: under "my computer". Right click and choose tools. Then run the standard disk test. (ScanDisk)
NOTE! Before you do it you must turn off all devices that write to the disk. I.e. antivirus programs with logging and firewalls with logging. If you don't turn them off, the test will restart over and over again and not finish.
This can then happen. (See problems above)
1) ScanDisk tells you it found errors in the recorded filesizes for your ongoing downloads, one at the time, and suggests a solution. Choose the alternative where scandisk changes the registered filesizes to match the physical sizes. After that you can just resume from your previous downloads. Very simple.
2) You might recieve a notice that your boot sectors are damaged. Let scandisk fix this problem by recording the correct values again. (You might get loads of free disk space back if you are lucky. I got 5.5 gig after this was done)
ScanDisk then might inform you it found xxxxxxx byte in x files that are probably just taking up space on your hard drive. THESE ARE YOUR DOWNLOADS. DO NOT DELETE! Choose the option where scandisk saves them as files. When scan disk is done, go to your root directory (C:/) and look for files named xxxx.chk
Move the xxxx.chk files to your standard winMX download directory and you will find your old download files with the filesize zero. (no wonder you could not resume, huh?) Now comes the tricky part. If you had more than one download, try to figure out which one is which. Rename the xxx.chk files and remove the zero byte files. The new files should be resumable. Ihave tried this several times and it works fine.
